Take a small subsection of hair from the
top of the section. A common mistake beginners make is using
too much hair at the beginning of the row. You should take as little
hair as you need to make a secure braid. That is going to vary from
person to person, but it's generally not more than a 3/4 cm. square area
of hair.
If you start with too much hair, you are
more likely to cause too much tension (pulling), yet at the same time,
the style will not hold as well. So when you take a small subsection, make
it really really small.
